Since the Jordan brand was first released in China in 1996, it has continuously been an inspiration for the country’s rich cultural love of basketball. Celebrating the new year in the Chinese Zodiac calendar in 2020, the Jordan brand is dropping the “Year of the Rat” collection.

It is a mixture of silhouettes both classic and modern. This capsule collection uses colors and embellishments inspired by previous Chinese New Year packs and traditional Yuxian paper cutting. The Jordan Retro 13, in particular, features a pastel color scheme — pink, tan, and cream hues — in premium suede. The shoe’s uppers are embossed with a star-like pattern that is reminiscent of ancient tiles or armor plating, China’s oldest currencies.

The same motif appears in black and white on the right shoe’s insole, accompanied by images of two small sets of feet that connect back to the zodiacal calendar—the Year of the Rat. The theme continues at the top of the shoe’s tongue, where the Jordan logo gets a similar “yin and yang” color scheme. The design is completed with a green holographic “cat-eye” on the lateral heel. The Air Jordan 13 Retro “CNY” is currently available for $200.
