Building a Community with Twitter Spaces

Twitter has already established itself as an integral part of sports fandom and the community it generates.

Traditional brands like TNT’s Inside The NBA successfully embraced this kind of shared-experience building long ago. There’s a well-established Twitter tribe that keeps up with the latest big in-game moments or whatever Chuck and Shaq are yelling at each other about. It’s been clear for awhile that sharing moments on Twitter with other fans heightens the experience.

And new tech options being introduced will keep that ball moving up the field.

The NFL and the NBA are partnering with Twitter Spaces to harness the power of its live audio hangout feature. The expectation is this will give fans a place to gather virtually while watching their teams go at it.

On a smaller scale—but with a broader vision—The Rubric[k] creates a virtual civic space for exploring “the operational elements of the NBA and its simultaneous impact on the Black community.”

Working in tandem with its YouTube channel, The Rubric[k] creates a platform—and gathers a community—to not only follow b-ball but also share thoughts about the off-court world and how it impacts the people who take the court. This has become especially rich territory in the aftermath of the Black Lives Matter movement. The Rubric[k] also touches on the business side of the NBA, discussing topics like the complex contractual realities of the league and its advertising and merchandising operations.

“Our goal is to make the NBA Spaces reflective of what makes hoop conversation on Twitter so special, the #NBATwitter community. We have all types of really fun use cases in store for the NBA’s long-term commitment to audio, via Twitter Spaces.”
